2 Vendemaire year 6

Blaise Burgstahler marries Anna Maria Schultz in Valff, Bas-Rhin. Her father is Blaise Schultz her mother Anna Maria Andlauer. How old is the bride? 20 something? Her death date makes her to be 48 years old or born 1772, but that would be before the marriage of her parents, not uncommon, but may explain why I can't find it in the village baptisms, she may have been born elsewhere as is common for unwed mothers.

Hello

Here is my reading and translation :

2 vendémiaire of year 6 of the republic

marriage of the citizen Blasius BURGSTAHLER, job "vagner" (= "Wagner" : wheelwright), aged 32 years, born and living in Valff, son of the deceased Christian BURGSTAHLER and Barbara ASFELDER (not sure of family name), both lived in Valff
and Anna Maria SCHULTZ, aged 24 years, daugther of Bläs SCHULTZ, citizen and plowman in Valff, aged 51 years, and Anna Maria ANTLAUER, aged 48 years ("Viertzig acht Jahr" : forty eight years - sure for the 8 - not fully sure for 4), married persons here in Valff, their legitimate daugter

You're right, if the daugther was born before the marriage, it's not uncommon. But she might baptized in another parish... for reputation reasons, it was not good for an unmarried woman to have a child born before the marriage !

Another possibility : are the parents actually catholic ? before French Revolution the are separate protestant and catholic parish books. But not all villages have both. Most were catholic only.

hello,
desolate answer in French not for lack of understanding English ( German would be easier to write) ;)
thanks to Hubert for transmitting

Concernant l'age d'A.M. Antlauer, c'est bien 48 ans :
voir les " v" de "- erscheint vor mir (ligne 2)
- des verstorbenen (ligne 6)
- ihres alters zwanzig vier Jahr (ligne 10).
best regards

Thanks to you both, very much. The village is very Catholic. I will stick with the 1772 date as the marriage records are mostly a year short on age and look to other villages for mother and daughter. Merci

Thanks very much for your time in looking this up, I found the baptism record as well in 1773 last night. You guys are great help! Anna had a sister Maria married to Blaise Voegel, I had them swapped. Anna Maria and Maria Anna give me grief.

You're welcome !

Annelyse did it great :)

You're right about the first names, you need to be very careful.

In Alsace, up to 19th century (sometimes later, up to 20th...), when there are several first names, the usual one might not be the first one but the last one !
There is no way to know for sure. From my findings, it was more the case for catholics, rather than protestants, but I don't know whether there is a rule.
