CAN I bring my DNA over from Ancestry.com without losing anything? Will it work in Geneanet? I have 5 or 6 trees, on myself, my husband, and a friend I may be related to. I also have DNA on my husband's tree. These are really BIG trees. I've worked on my own trees since 1976!! Since I retired, I've had tons of time to add more to all of them. IS there an easy way to move them over? One of my own trees has 27,000 ancestors! CAN Geneanet handle a tree that large?

DOES Geneanet promise NOT to share MY DNA info with ANYONE, including government entities? This AND the cost, is the reason I want to move from Ancestry. They were recently bought out, and recent events are causing me to worry about my PRIVATE information, and DNA being mis-handled!

I'm afraid to stay, and can't afford to stay, but, also afraid of losing 45 yrs of my blood, sweat, and tears, when I move! Please, I need some SERIOUS, knowledgeable assurance! Also, does it cost more to maintain several trees?

Will my photos on Ancestry move with the data, and DNA? Donna Drury

Yes, you can upload your DNA data from Ancestry.com to Geneanet. Please read https://en.geneanet.org/dna/help/how-to-download-your-dna-data-from-ancestrydna

Note that we have launched Geneanet DNA 9 months ago so you will not have as many matches as you have on Ancestry.com at this time.

Of course, Geneanet will never share your DNA data with anyone, including government entities.

You can read our DNA Code of Ethics at https://en.geneanet.org/dna/legal/dna-code-of-ethics

On Geneanet, you can have only one family tree per account. You can export a GEDCOM file from Ancestry.com then import it to Geneanet at https://my.geneanet.org/arbre/

Geneanet easily handle family trees with millions of individuals. There are some on Geneanet. For example, you can browse this family tree with 2.5 million individuals: https://gw.geneanet.org/pierfit

Unfortunately, your photos will not be automatically imported to Geneanet from your Ancestry.com account because we don't have access to their servers.

You can have a family tree with an unlimited number of individuals for free.

Hi Donna,

If cost is a major factor, you should be able to switch to a free Ancestry account. You will lose access to most of Ancestry's document library and some search tools, but you will be able to continue hosting and editing your tree there. Of course, you can also keep a copy on Geneanet as explained above.

The raw DNA data you can download from Ancestry only contains information about your chromosomes, but not any of the matches. So you would lose the matches from Ancestry but may get new matches on Geneanet you didn't know about.

Your best option is to test the transfer and see if it's appropriate for you.

Thanks for all the advice. I forgot to ask, how many generations back does Geneanet DNA go? Apparently, Ancestry is limited to 8 generations. I have matches on every family line back to my 5th Great Grandparents. Also, on my husband's family. But, nothing beyond 5th Great Grandparents. They never said anything about an 8th Generation Wall. Is there a "DNA wall" on Geneanet? Donna Drury

Hi Donna,

There is no artificial "DNA wall" that blocks matches after a certain amount of generations, but there are basic biological limitations. After 8 generations, DNA segments may become so fragmented that they cannot confirm a relationship with confidence. You'll also start running into more IBP segments (Identical By Population). If you look at https://dnapainter.com/tools/sharedcmv4, you can see how little DNA you share with 6th, 7th or 8th cousins.

To clarify, Ancestry compares your DNA with all other AncestryDNA members and Geneanet compares your DNA with all Geneanet members who uploaded their DNA information. If you upload your DNA to Geneanet, you will most likely get new matches from Geneanet's members. If you remove your DNA from Ancestry, you will lose all matches on that platform. If you want to find more cousins, keep your DNA on both platforms.
